However, some suggested causes include changes in digestive motility, infections, brain-gut interactions, bacterial overgrowth, food sensitivities, carbohydrate malabsorption and intestinal inflammation (<a class=\"content-link css-5r4717\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4051916\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">3<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"content-link css-5r4717\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24665829\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">4<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Eating certain foods can trigger symptoms, and stress can worsen them (<a class=\"content-link css-5r4717\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4051916\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">3<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"content-link css-5r4717\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16391571\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">5<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>IBS is diagnosed when you have abdominal pain at least one day per week for three months, plus at least two of the following symptoms: pain related to a bowel movement, a change in stool frequency or a change in stool appearance (<a class=\"content-link css-5r4717\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5383110\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">6<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In addition, there are four subtypes of IBS, which relate to the type of bowel movement most often experienced (<a class=\"content-link css-5r4717\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5383110\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">6<\/a>):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>IBS-D:<\/strong>\u00a0Diarrhea-predominant<\/li>\n<li><strong>IBS-C:<\/strong>\u00a0Constipation-predominant<\/li>\n<li><strong>IBS-M:<\/strong>\u00a0Alternating between diarrhea and constipation<\/li>\n<li><strong>IBS-U:<\/strong>\u00a0Unspecified, for people who do not fit into one of the above categories<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Another subtype, known as \u201cpost-infectious\u201d IBS has also been suggested for people who develop the disease following an infection. This subtype may apply to as many as 25% of people with IBS (<a class=\"content-link css-5r4717\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4051916\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">3<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Treatment for all subtypes includes medication, diet and lifestyle improvements, the elimination of FODMAPs and lactose and the use of probiotics (<a class=\"content-link css-5r4717\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4051916\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">3<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-link css-5r4717\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/fodmaps-101\">FODMAPs<\/a>\u00a0are poorly digested types of carbohydrate molecules found naturally in many foods.
